Our Research Impact

At the 2010 International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Bill Gates reminded the world that we can't treat our way out of the AIDS pandemic.

Billions are spent globally on treatment and prevention.  However, the only sustainable answer to AIDS is to find a vaccine or a cure – and that answer will be found in research.

Since the beginning of this crisis, CANFAR has led the way, funding HIV and AIDS research across Canada. Canadian doctors and researchers have made their mark globally.

CANFAR-funded breakthroughs include:

  • The discovery of the antiretroviral cocktail which keeps millions of people alive today;
  • The reduction of the rate of transmission between an HIV-positive mother and her baby to near zero with proper treatment;
  • Ground-breaking work with microbicides (the female condom); and
  • Precedent-setting research in the search for a cure or vaccine, including a promising candidate recently unveiled.

We are proud of the impact we have made in the global fight against HIV and AIDS, but we won't stop until we have found the answer that ends AIDS once and for all.
