The Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR) is committed to excellence in safeguarding privacy. We value the trust that you have placed in us and understand the importance of maintaining this trust. CANFAR is committed to being fully accountable and transparent with all our donors, website members, advertising partners and other stakeholders. This policy is designed to fully disclose to you how we treat the information that you have chosen to share with us.

In our efforts to raise funds and awareness for HIV & AIDS research, we frequently gather and use Personal Information.

CANFAR uses Personal and non-Personal Information for the following general purposes: to customize the content and advertising you see on our pages, to fulfill your requests for certain products and services, to improve our services, to provide CANFAR supporter information and notices, and to contact you with service announcements or administrative messages relating to your CANFAR website membership.

The CANFAR website is hosted in the United States. If you are located outside the United States, you expressly agree that your Personal Information and related data will be transferred to the United States for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy as a result of your using the CANFAR tools and Services.

The CANFAR website (http://www.CANFAR.com) is a general audience site and does not knowingly collect Personal Information or related data from children under 13 years of age.

Personal Information

Personal Information is any information that can be used to distinguish, identify or contact a specific individual. This information can include an individual's name, contact information, opinions, social status and family relationships.

Exceptions include business-related information and certain publicly available information such as business address, name, title and fax number. Where an individual uses his or her home contact information as business contact information, CANFAR considers that the contact information provided is business contact information.

Privacy Practices

The privacy of a CANFAR stakeholder’s Personal Information is never compromised. Safeguards are in place to ensure that all Personal Information in the possession of CANFAR is kept confidential and secure. Access to Personal Information is only given to CANFAR, or its agents, affiliates or supporter's employees who must use the Personal Information for the reason for which it was obtained, or for the purposes for which you have consented to its use.

CANFAR collects your email address, first and last name, city, province, postal code, country, gender, and date of birth from you in order to register you as a Member (“Registration Data”). If you elect not to provide some or all of this information, CANFAR cannot register you as a Member without this information. Additionally, CANFAR collects your address and payment information from you in order to collect a donation.

Once you register with CANFAR and sign in to our Service, you are not anonymous to us. Information other than the ongoing that you provide during registration, that you post on your personal profile, or that you post on the CANFAR website, is voluntary. CANFAR may also collect Personal Information from you if you choose to participate in activities like sweepstakes, contests, polls, and surveys, or because you want us to furnish you with services, newsletters, or information, or in connection with content or suggestions you submit to CANFAR.

In addition, CANFAR collects other Related Data and non-Personal Information including IP address, aggregate user data, and browser type. This data is used to manage and improve the CANFAR services, track usage on the CANFAR site, and for security purposes.

CANFAR website Members may also choose to provide or store Non-Personal Information and Related Data in their profiles, including but not limited to interests, blogs, videos and/or pictures, private messages, bulletins or personal statements (collectively “Profile Information”). The Profile Information in a Member’s profile is provided at his or her sole discretion. Please be aware that your Public Profile, as well as any information posted to any public forum, can be accessed by the public. Your Public Profile can be accessed by you at any time. Your Public Profile may be accessed by CANFAR at all times and, in limited cases, by certain third parties authorized by CANFAR for purposes of ensuring compliance with CANFAR’s Terms of Use.


Information Sharing and Disclosure

Periodically, CANFAR may utilize your name, address, phone number or your e-mail address for internal solicitation and list exchange purposes or provide it to external companies that we have entered into a partnership / confidentiality agreement in order to provide value-added services.

If you do not wish to receive these mailings, or if you do not wish to have your name provided to these companies, please uncheck the inclusion boxes in the appropriate area (available in every newsletter and on website) or call Sherrie James at 1-800-563-CURE (2873) or by e-mail at sjames@CANFAR.com.

From time to time, CANFAR may share your information with like-minded organizations. Your name will not be shared until you have had an opportunity to decline. This is re-checked regularly, and donors can opt out at any time.

Donors may be publicly recognized by CANFAR in our annual report, our newsletter, The Catalyst, on our website, www.CANFAR.com, or through other vehicles. If you prefer to remain anonymous, please indicate this when making your gift or pledge, in the box provided for this purpose, or contact us directly to inform us of your wishes.

The above notwithstanding, CANFAR will not share Personal Information about you to other companies or people unless:

  • We need to share your information to provide the product or service you have requested;
  • We need to share the information with companies who work on behalf of CANFAR to provide a product or service to you. Please know that whenever we share your Personal Information with these trusted business partners, they work under confidentiality agreements. (Unless we tell you differently, these companies do not have any right to use the Personal Information we provide to them beyond what is necessary to assist us);
  • We reasonably believe it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, or as otherwise required or permitted by law;
  • We respond to warrants, subpoenas, court orders or legal process or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims;
  • We find that your actions on our website violate the CANFAR Terms of Service or any of our usage guidelines for specific services; or
  • We may transfer information about you if CANFAR merges with another charity. In this event, CANFAR will notify you before information about you is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.


Website and Electronic Commerce

Our website is operated for the benefit of those interested in supporting CANFAR and other stakeholders. It is free for use by individual web users. No registration is required to browse most content on our website.

Registration is required to become a website member, to use CANFAR’s suite of web-based tools, and to make a donation.

CANFAR collects personal and financial information when you make an online donation. These donations are processed securely through our third party donation processor, Artez Interactive.

CANFAR maintains reasonable physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect your Personal Information. CANFAR works with its vendors and partners to protect the security and privacy of user information.

For website users under the age of majority in your place of residence, please be sure to obtain your parent's or guardian's permission before you send any information about yourself (your name, e-mail address, etc.) to us or anyone else over the Internet. We encourage parents to get involved with their children's online usage and to be aware of the activities in which they are participating.

Cookies

Like many other websites, we use cookies to better understand how our site is used, to make sure our information and dynamic content are served correctly, and to improve the performance of our site for our users. CANFAR does not use cookies to retain Personal Information about our users. Aggregated site usage data may be provided to our partners or advertisers, but we will never share specific information about any member.

Third party advertisements displayed on the CANFAR website may also contain cookies set by Internet advertising companies or advertisers (known as “third party cookies”). CANFAR does not control these third party cookies and users of the CANFAR Service should check the privacy policy of the Internet advertising company or advertiser to see whether and how it uses cookies. A pixel tag is a tiny image inserted in a webpage and used to record the number and types of views for that page. You can program your computer to warn you each time a cookie is being sent, block third party cookies or block all cookies. Any links provided to third party websites outside of CANFAR are provided solely for your convenience. The operation and content of such third party websites is beyond our control, and we do not endorse in any manner whatsoever or accept any responsibility for the content or other material that may be contained on such websites, any claims made by such websites, the use of such websites, or any products or services advertised on or sold through any such websites. We will not be liable under any circumstances for any damages whatsoever, direct or indirect, resulting from any use of the CANFAR website or any third party website linked to the CANFAR website, whether or not we are advised of the possibility of such damages.

The CANFAR website and Service may also carry advertisements from other companies. Updating Your Information

CANFAR Members can change their Registration Data and Profile Information at any time using the Account Settings portion of the CANFAR site. You may also request deletion of your Profile by sending an email directly to support@canfar.com with “Delete my Profile” in the subject line.

If your personal information has changed, please call 1-800-563-CURE (2873) and ask for Lynne Butler or e-mail her at lbutler@CANFAR.com and she will be happy to help you.

Privacy Policy Updates

We regularly review our privacy practices to ensure that we are not only complying with Canada's federal privacy legislation, but also exceeding it to protect our Members and maintain their trust. We may change this policy from time to time to ensure this standard of compliance is met. Changes will be reflected in this posting. Please check this page periodically for changes. Your continued use of this site following the posting of changes to this policy will mean you accept those changes.

Rider 1

We will keep your personal information only as long as is reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy or such longer period as may be required by applicable law.

Rider 2

You are entitled to request access to, and, if necessary, correct your Personal Information collected by us. In order to make such a request, please amend your Profile or contact our privacy officer in writing.

CANFAR will remove any of your personal information from our database within a reasonable period of time pursuant to a written request from you.

You can also contact our privacy officer for any questions about to make any complaint in relation to this Policy, as well as to CANFAR's privacy practices in general (see the "Contact Information" section below).

Social Media

CANFAR has installed on the site various social media plug-in protocols, such as Facebook's "Like" button, which allow you to share your likes and interests in CANFAR with your friends and contacts. When you click on a social medua plug-in protocol link, such as the Like buttin, a link to our site may appear in the "Likes and Interests" section of your Facebook or other social media website profile. Your friends and contacts will be able to see the link and be led back to the Site if they share your likes and interests or if they are interested in learning more about our products, services, and promotions. We may also contact you, and those of your friends and contacts who chose to become members of CANFAR social media website webpages, with news about CANFAR so you and your friends and contacts can learn about CANFAR. By using a social media plug-in protocol link, you consent to receiving communications from us for all of these purposes and agree to allow us to use information on your likes and interests in connection with the provision of information about CANFAR. You understand that information about your likes and interests may be shared with your friends and contacts and the broader social-media website community.
