The day people around the world unite in solidarity in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This profoundly important day marks the moment when the world shows its collective support and compassion for those currently living with or affected by HIV and AIDS.
In the early 1990’s, a group of artists met to discuss how to get people talking about HIV. This was at a time when HIV was highly stigmatised and the artists wanted to create a visual expression of compassion for people affected by HIV. They came up with the red ribbon. The shape of the ribbon was chosen because it was easy to make and anyone could make their own by cutting off a piece of ribbon, looping it around a finger, and securing it with a pin. The colour red was chosen because it is bold and visible, and it represents passion and love. The red ribbon is now the universal symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV.
What is #RedtoShow?
This year, we are using the hashtag #RedtoShow to get Canadians from coast to coast to display their solidarity with people affected by HIV and AIDS while also raising money to fight the disease.
Leading up to and on December 1, take a picture with something red, and use the hashtag #RedtoShow with another hashtag of your choice to show your support for people affected by HIV and AIDS. For every post tagged with #RedtoShow, Freedom International Brokerage Company will donate $1 to Canadian HIV and AIDS. Your post can help raise up to $8,000.
